「Half day local spa experience tour」
Hello dear readers.
I’m Hashi, your Beppu local guide.
In this post, I’m going to share with you my trip as a local guide with two of my resident foreign guests, and their reactions!
For those of you who are planning a trip to Beppu after the pandemic I hope you will find the contents of this article useful in planning your own trip! So let’s go!
WANDER COMPASS
Beppu’s tourist information center for inbound visitors.
Here they listen to the visitors’ hobbies and interests, and suggest the best recommendations based on what they like. This time our guest wanted to experience something other than hot springs, such as a ropeway, so we created a tour that included this.
BEPPU ROPEWAY
Mt.Tsurumi, is one of the 300 most famous mountains in Japan. The ropeway takes you all the way up to the top of the mountain, where you can see the beautiful autumn colours of the mountain and the city of Beppu. However, on the day of the tour, there was a dense fog. It was so thick that you couldn’t even see one metre ahead. However, it was still a very interesting experience.
At the top of the mountain you can find the maze of seven gods of good fortune enshrined in various places. The stone statues of the gods, dotted around the maze on the misty summit, were mysterious and they seemed to be enjoying themselves.
KAN-NAWA onsen area
From the ropeway, we took a local bus to the town of Kanawa. Here you can see the hot spring water flowing under the road and the steam rising everywhere around town. It’s a sight that can only be seen in Beppu!. Even if it is raining, you can still see the steam, so there’s no need to be worried about the weather!
Though the scenery in Kanawa is beautiful, what the guests enjoyed the most was actually the traditional Japanese shops. It was a “da-gashi-ya”, which is a sweets shop! In the old days of Japan, you would find it in every shopping street, and it is a spot that tickles the fancy of every Japanese child. You can find all sorts of cheap sweets here, so why not take a trip back in time?
STEAMING BATH
This is a unique type of hot spring called “steam bath”, which we have introduced earlier on this website.
Even if you don’t like the idea of taking off your clothes to soak in the hot water, you won’t have to worry. This time our guest tried a steam bath for the first time. There were many reasons for this, such as not liking the hot content like a sauna, or being afraid of the enclosed space, but everyone was brave enough to try it.
After putting on a kimono and entering a small room that looks like a cave, you will find herbs spread all over the floor. Their herbs have a nice smell and steam that warms you from the core. Although the length of time spent in the steam room varies from person to person, everyone comes out of the steam room with a refreshed and satisfied face. One of the most attractive features of the bath is the exposure to the fresh air after exiting the steam bath. The breeze from the hot spring town of Beppu is very refreshing, especially at this time of year. Why don’t you try a steaming bath to rejuvenate your body?!

BACK TO WANDER COMPASS
Finally, we returned to Wonder compass Beppu for a commemorative photo.
They seemed to have become good friends with the locals at the information center. The two guests left very satisfied with their visit, already talking about where to go next time.
What did you think?
Beppu hot spring tour for two people who are not good at hot springs. Don’t give up because you don’t like hot springs, talk to the locals first!
There are a lot of Japanese people who don’t like hot springs, so there are actually a lot of things to do in Beppu that even those people can enjoy! Why don’t you take a step forward and enjoy yourself!
