From Fukuoka, the limited express Sonic gets you there in as little as 2 hours and 1 minute, and the highway bus "Toyonokuni-go" takes about 2 hours and 20 minutes — staying overnight is the best way to take it all in, but Beppu is close enough to Fukuoka that even a day trip gives you a real taste of it.
