We introduce you to the secret hot spring “Gotouen” in Beppu. In the depths of the mountains of Beppu you’ll find Gotouen, a one-man run onsen facility. Being one of the lesser known hot spring spots in Beppu, this is perfect for the traveler who wants to experience something different from the popular tourist destinations. Visit Gotouen to relish in the privacy of your own onsen while surrounded by nature!
Finding Gotouen
As Gotouen is a bit far off the main road, getting there can be a trip in itself. Though it’s possible to take the bus and walk there, we would recommend traveling there by car for a safer and more convenient trip. If you are like me and can’t access a car, you can take the 36 bus headed to Yufuin and get off at Horita bus stop.
From there you will have to follow the road up until you reach a tunnel helping you cross the highway. While walking you might question if you’re actually on the right track, but follow the map and you’re sure to find your way to Gotouen. If you decide to go by foot, the trip to Gotouen can be a bit of an experience, but seeing the stairs up to the secluded hot spring makes it all worth it!
In one with nature
As Gotouen is a bit off the grid, you won’t be running into a lot of people except a couple of locals. This leaves you with the opportunity to pick and choose between the onsens as you like! As mentioned earlier, Gotouen consists of four private hot springs to choose from; all with their own particular charm. One of Gouten’s biggest selling points is the incredible nature you’ll be surrounded with while relaxing in the hot spring. What could better complement the warm and welcoming onsen than a gorgeous view of Beppu’s mountains and landscape?
You can find every onsen at Gotouen inside one of these charming wooden huts. The onsen itself is made of stone, and is rich in healing abilities. The water is completely clear, allowing you to really enjoy the beautiful design of Gotouen hot springs that blends in with the surrounding scenery. The temperature of the water goes perfectly with the mild sunny January weather in Beppu, allowing you to stay in the water for a while without having to take a lot of breaks.
The sound of wildlife
The onsens are all similar in that they provide a tropical feel, owing to the overall architecture of Gotouen. Here you can enjoy the sound of the wildlife, which makes for great background noise for your relaxing bath. All toiletries are provided by the facility, but you will have to bring your own towel. As always, make sure to wash off before you enter the onsen.
Though we can guarantee you will have a splendid time no matter which onsen you choose, we would in particular recommend the open air bath with a direct view of the mountains. The view makes for quite a refreshing alternative to the tight and trafficked city.
Replenish your energy with onsen steamed food
After you finish your dip in the hot spring you can relax at the terrace area with a cold drink from the vending machine. The seating area is quite big and can also be rented for BBQ parties for you and your friends. If you’re hungry, there’s an opportunity to try onsen steamed food in true Beppu fashion. Bring your own food (vegetables and eggs in particular are recommended), and then steam them for the perfect after bath meal!
Try something off the path
Gotouen is a hidden pearl in every sense of the word. The landscape is truly a sight for sore eyes and is sure to replenish your energy while you soak in the hot spring. We would recommend going a bit early in the morning to truly make the most of the weather, and get a great head start to your day. If you are looking for something that is not any of the usual hot spots in Beppu, get off the main road and find your way to the nature-surrounded Gotouen!
