The first thing that people think of when they think of Beppu is the “hot spring hells tour” or (Jigoku Meguri)”. In this tour, you can see the famous Umi Jigoku, or “Sea Hell,” and next to that you will find Oniishi No Yu. In this article, we will introduce this hot spring, which is perfect for anyone in Beppu, especially if you want to take a break from the hells tour.
Excellent for tourists visiting the hells
The entrance to this onsen is on the left of the Umi Jigoku when you are heading to the Oniishibozu Jigoku (“Monk’s Head Hell”). After going through reception, you will arrive at the building with the hot springs (across from the entrance to the Oniishibozu Jigoku.)
Because the slope down to the onsen is not steep, it is safe even with a wheelchair or stroller. You can feel nature around you as you make your way towards the hot spring.
Open air bath where you can enjoy the forest scenery as you bathe!
One of the main characteristics of Oniishi no Yu is the outdoor hot spring. There are two open air baths at the first floor and also second floor. To the second floor, you will see the stairs the first floor outside the building.
At most Beppu onsen, there are rules stating that you cannot sit on the edge of the bathtub for sanitary reasons as some people like to rest their head on the edge of the onsen while they relax. However, at this onsen you can sit on the edge of the bath, so feel free to do so if you need to cool down if it gets too hot in the water.
Enjoying a bath in the forest while surrounded by green trees will relax both your mind and body.
The indoor bath on the men’s side is a Japanese cypress bath, and the women’s indoor bath is a rock bath. Both use the onsen water rich in metasilicic acid, the moisturizing agent found in the water of this onsen. If you enter this hot spring after going to Myoban Onsen, the effect will be even stronger.
Showers, shampoo, conditioner, and body soap are all provided. Towels can either be rented at 150 yen or bought at 200 yen, so feel free to come to this onsen even if you do not have anything with you.
We also recommend the family bath, which can be enjoyed by any visitor.
There are also five “family baths” in Oniishi no Yu for those who want to relax with their families, in private with lovers or friends, or those who are too embarrassed to show their skin for religious or personal reasons. Anyone can rent this room, so you can still enjoy this onsen even if you do not want to enter the main onsen.
